Shopping Your Closet

Do you ever find yourself just sort of staring at your closet wondering why you have literally NOTHING to wear? And then do you ever get that sudden urge to just go on a shopping spree and buy yourself a completely new wardrobe? 'Cause that happens to me...almost on the daily. Unfortunately student loans and other "adult" expenses tend to make shopping sprees a no go.

So the question is: what do you do when you can't afford to run out and buy everything Express, TJ Maxx, Target, or your other fav store has to offer?

Answer: Shop around YOUR store...otherwise known as your closet

The reality is that we all get into ruts every once in a while. We have those few outfits that consistently make us feel confident and stylish but when you've worn those to the last three get-togethers with friends it might be time for a new look. Even if it feels like you've already paired everything up into outfits and have no other options chances are there's more combinations hiding in that closet of yours. And finding them doesn't have to be stressful or discouraging!

Don't let yourself turn your beautiful wardrobe into something that bores you

Treat it like you're out on an actual shopping trip. Start by going through your closet. Look at the different pieces that make up your wardrobe and collect some of your faves. Grab a variety: a few tops, a pair of jeans, a skirt or two, maybe a jacket, but keep in mind that the end goal is at least one new outfit. Pick things that you think might work together. Even if it seems a little out of the ordinary for you to wear, give it a shot! You're just trying things on after all. You don't have to "buy" everything you touch. Start mixing and matching the pieces you picked. If a look doesn't quite "work" for you but inspires you to try something else go for it! Don't be afraid to try new things and be creative.

After you've paired up a couple new essentials, shop for a few accessories that can add different twists to the look. A pair of sneakers and a scarf one day then a pair of wedges with stacked bracelets the next week are far from the same look.

If walking the racks of your wardrobe is just a little overwhelming for you, start with that wonderful go-to combo you put on when you just don't have the energy to find something else. Just focus on shaking up that look in someway. Take one piece of that outfit and find a new look for it. Can you pair the top with a skirt? Or maybe distressed denim instead of those black leggings? What accessories do you have that can change the look? You'd be amazed what a good jacket/cardigan, necklace, or a different pair of shoes can do for a look!

Sometimes we just get so stuck in a rut that we feel like nothing else looks as good as that one, very specific, combo. If you need to call in some reinforcements do it! I love having other people shop my closet for me. It helps me get outside my box and try new things. So make it fun and invite a couple friends to be a part of it! Have some bonding time shopping through each others' closets and updating those wardrobes without spending that paycheck you just got.

So go hit the racks and let me know what you find by using the hashtag #stylemoorelivemore on Instagram or Twitter! I'll be sharing my own shopping experience with you next week. Don't forget to check it out!

Much love,

Millie
